*update: I successfully defended my Ph.D. thesis on 8/2/2010.  I am now a research staff at MIT Lincoln Lab (www.ll.mit.edu) working on interesting research and development projects.   The following describes my previous life at U of M.

I am a Ph.D. candidate in Information Science at the University of Michigan.  My advisor is Mark S. Ackerman, and I am a member of the SocialWorlds research group at the School of Information.

I am currently working on my dissertation on new mechanisms and tools for distilling discussion spaces and providing help in an online community.  In the past, I have studied an Internet-scale knowledge building community to understand users’ motivations, behaviors, and mechanisms in generating knowledge and helping others.  I have also developed a collaborative authoring tool in order to help a small number of human experts to distill a large discussion space into reusable information as well as matching experts with knowledge. (See “Research projects” section for more detail.)
